Contract Opportunity: Energy Storage Financial Modeling Consultant (Remote)

Transform Financial Models into Market-Ready Tools

We’re advancing a portfolio of behind-the-meter (BTM) battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the PJM market—and we’re looking for an experienced consultant to refine and elevate our client's project economics platform.

Our client's existing Excel-based pro forma is comprehensive: demand charge reduction, 5CP capacity savings, frequency regulation (Reg D), Solver-based dispatch optimization, full tax/finance integration, and polished client-facing dashboards. Your role? Turn it into a scalable, investor-grade model capable of supporting portfolio-wide deployment.

🧭Your Mission

Support our client's development team by auditing, optimizing, and future-proofing a robust C&I storage model, ensuring accuracy, scalability, and clarity. You’ll work closely with internal analysts to validate the technical logic, streamline performance, and document assumptions in a way that builds confidence for investors and financial partners.

🎯Key Objectives

  • Audit & Validation: Ensure alignment with PJM tariff structures, settlement rules, and industry-standard financial modeling practices.

  • Dispatch Optimization: Refactor Solver-based dispatch engine (including SoC logic, charge/discharge cycles, and constraints) for speed, transparency, and 8760/15-min granularity.

  • Market Data Automation: Integrate utility tariff rates and PJM Reg D pricing via script or API pipelines.

  • Scenario Testing: Implement base/upside/downside cases with sensitivity toggles, tornado charting, and optional Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Investor-Grade Documentation: Produce clean, well-organized user manuals, methodology overviews, and accuracy sign-offs.

  • Team Enablement: Lead two remote training sessions to walk through model architecture and transfer institutional knowledge.

🛠Scope of Work

  • Model Audit

    – Line-by-line review of demand, capacity, regulation revenue, degradation, tax, and financing logic.

  • Dispatch Overhaul

    – Enhanced dispatch engine using Solver, VBA, or MILP techniques.

  • Data Pipeline Buildout

    – Automation of market pricing and utility rates into model inputs.

  • Sensitivity & Scenario Framework

    – Switchboard design, visual risk tools, and scenario toggling.

  • Documentation & Handoff

    – Full PDF user guide, version history, and recorded team workshops.

📆Engagement Timeline

  • Kickoff: Immediate upon NDA execution

  • Audit Memo: Delivered by Day 10

  • Model Update: Completed by Day 30 (meets test accuracy and performance targets)

  • Final Delivery: By Day 45, with all enhancements and investor-ready outputs

  • Training: By Day 50, including two recorded Zoom sessions

Contract Duration: ~8 weeks |Estimated Hours: Up to 120 |Work Mode: Fully remote with weekly syncs (Tuesdays @ 10am CT)

Who We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years

of hands-on experience building or auditing financial models in energy storage or utility-scale renewables

  • Deep expertise

in PJM markets, including Regulation D, capacity mechanisms (5CP/PLC), and settlement procedures

  • Advanced Excel/VBA

modeling skills, including Solver and macro logic; familiarity with optimization tools (Pyomo, Gurobi) is a plus

  • Strong understanding

of tax equity, ITC/MACRS, and structured finance for energy projects

  • Fluency in communicating assumptions and methodologies

    in clear, investor-grade documentation

  • Preferred Certifications: CFA, CPA, PMP, NABCEP (Storage)
